Lazy Faire magazine

team lead, editorial design, project management

project overview

From October of 2023 to March of 2024, I had the opportunity to be a part of the Lazy Faire magazine creative team, mainly working in the position of design lead and then eventually Creative Director.

Lazy Faire magazine is a student club run by business students for business students at the University of Alberta. This past year, the club had high expectations in elevating their branding, expanding the reach of the magazine across campus, and increasing the quality of each magazine.

This project will go over my role in creating the two issues we published in the fall and winter semester respectively.

november issue

For the November issue, I had the role of the Design Lead. I was responsible for coming up with the style and look for this issue, the cover, the table of contents, 2 multi-page articles, and then 1 single page article.

The theme for this issue was change; reflecting the change in the club’s new branding, and change around the School of Business in general. For this issue, I decided it was best to lean into that new branding, which was designed by Kyle Bigoray, and feature it as a main character. I wanted the spreads to feel colourful, but also clean and utilise white space in interesting and engaging ways.

march issue

Between the November and March issues, Lazy Faire went through many changes behind the scenes. Mainly, I stepped into the role of Creative Director, and our design team went from three people to six. We were gearing up for a bigger, more ambitious issue, one that was dealing with the intersections between the business world and design world. For this issue, Hafsah Mohummed was design lead.

The cover for the second issue.

Since my role expanded by a considerate degree for this issue, I had far more involvement across the entirety of the magazine. I was responsible for coordinating the photo shoot for the cover, and leading the team throughout the creation of the magazine. As for my creative contributions, I was asked by the Executive Director to contribute an article on design thinking, and I ended up designing 3 articles, totalling 16 pages.
